It’s a great time to be alive if you are even remotely interested in technology. Over the last few years new technologies have completely changed how we listen to music, order food or call a taxi. This same trend is occurring in the world of supply chains. How can we benefit from these emerging technologies and make our supply chain more sustainable?
One of the main challenges for sustainability standards today is that brand owners and retailers are choosing their own sustainability metrics, and they demand information on these metrics, too. Therefore, sustainability standards must constantly evolve towards being data managers. New and exciting technologies that are emerging right now can help standards capture data more efficiently whilst ensuring data quality at the same time.
Internet of Things in practice
One of the technologies with the most impact for supply chain sustainability is the Internet of Things. Simply stated, the Internet of Things is a network of physical devices that collect data, are connected to each other and can exchange data automatically with each other.
The most well-known example of this technology is the self-driving car, but there are countless other examples. In agriculture the Internet of Things is already being used to innovate farming methods.
For example, drones can be used to inspect crop fields where crops that are affected with a disease can be identified, isolated and removed. Another example is the upcoming FlexScreen project in which ChainPoint is involved.
The aim of the FlexScreen project is to optimize animal health and food safety monitoring in the meat supply chain. Using sensor data, zoonotic diseases in meat can be detected at a very early stage in the process. The data captured by the sensor will then be transferred into a monitoring model which will ultimately lead to an improved flow of information, better animal health and increased food safety.
Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain
The Internet of Things is not the only new technology that can improve the sustainability of supply chains. New trends in Business Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence and blockchain are among the other technologies that show a lot of potential.
